i did a lot of backpacking in the Mountain Province area from 1999 to the early 2000’s. the beauty & serenity of the place provided the salve that helped ease the pain of my then hurting heart.
when my work would allow it, i would sometime disappear in the area for a week with my camping gears & my camera. i would usually take trails off the usual tourist paths & would always try to get close to the locals of the place as much as i could. talking to them & knowing more about them.
i took this photo in one of my forays in the area. i think it was in banaue. hapao, in particular. i saw her, the kid, looking at me intently as i pass by. when i pointed my camera at her, she tried to hide behind that wood fence.
lucky that i was able to get one shot as she darted off to her house right after i pushed the shutter button. i wasn’t able say thank you nor even give her a smile.

i was drawn to the bashful but friendly smile of this aeta kid. i feel very lucky to have captured that smile in this photo.
i took this photo sometime in 1998 somewhere in tarlac. just before taking an oven-hot 8-hour trek to the Mt. Pinatubo crater through eerily beautiful lahar-scuptured landscape.
Thinking of You
An 80’s classic by The Colourfield. This track came from the album Virgins & Philistines which was released in 1985.
We fell in love, got high, broke our hearts, & got drunk with this song.
